THE BARNSTABLE COUNTY HUMAN RIGHTS ADVISORY COMMISSION IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE 2019 ROSENTHAL, CORNERSTONE AND TIM MCCARTHY AWARD RECIPIENTS
Barnstable, MA – December 2, 2019
The Rosenthal Community Champion Award, after Irving Leopold Rosenthal is given to those in the public sector who fostered and supported human rights, concepts, and ideals, who have worked to advance human rights and to eliminate discrimination.
Rosenthal award recipient: Barnstable Community Innovation School:
The staff, under the leadership of Principal Cathy Hamilton-Milne has created an environment for families that embraces multiple culturally diverse population; increased awareness of staff to the warning signs of student / family struggles; adapted and increased communication and assistance for families; ensures families that they are in a safe environment, especially those adapting to a new environment when they have come from a place of fear and violence; works with students to develop civic skills assisting families thru local, legal services for documentation, counselling, and other relative circumstances; opening the eyes of all students and families to see the world in new and compassionate ways.
The Cornerstone Award is given to those who have fostered and supported human rights, concepts, and ideals.
Cornerstone Award Recipient: Cape Cod PATH (People Against the Trafficking of Humans)
Their mission statement is: “to eliminate human trafficking on Cape Cod by raising awareness through education, outreach and collaboration”. Endeavors include participation and presentations such as: Vigil for Human Trafficking Awareness; Volunteers have Assembled and delivered Resource bags for trafficking survivors; Visiting hotels distributing flyers and offering staff training, also libraries, schools, religious and community organizations; Participating in discussion panels to educate the public. Trafficking encompasses forced labor – especially among immigrants, child sexual exploitation, involuntary domestic service. By raising awareness thru multiple organizations CC PATH has made incredible strides for our community to open our eyes, and our minds to be more aware of our surroundings.
The Tim McCarthy Human Rights Champion Award an individual/organization with a Cape connection working to promote human rights, affirmed in the United Nations’ 1948 “Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” Tim emphasized environmental, LGBTQ rights.
Tim McCarthy Human Rights Champion Award Recipient: Rev. Brenda L. Haywood
As Community Minister and Pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House of Provincetown, Ma; she has lived on devoted her life to her Ministry of Social Justice-teaching children about issues of race, peace and self-empowerment. Founder of Racial Justice Provincetown (RJP) – works include: World Peace Day activities, vigils after school shootings and other events; discussion groups on white privilege, indigenous peoples and hate crimes. Works with the Provincetown Police Dept. on civil rights, hate crimes and community policing. A mentor affiliated with the Provincetown Public School Baccalaureate Program; bringing to classrooms projects which create activities on topics including: MLK day; Wampanoag Nation and more. Children created “Diversity Banners” and written theme-poetry, and journeyed to the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, AL where they raised $200 for the SPLC’s “Banner of Tolerance.” Ms. Haywood’s work in Cape schools includes exposure to Wampanoag “First Nation” inhabitants, Black History Month, “Diversity Makes us Beautiful” program. She is the 2017 NAACP award recipient of “Community Minister.”
