Six Cape Cod Towns will receive funding from Barnstable County Department of Human Services SAPC Grant

Funding will support various substance use prevention initiatives

Barnstable, Massachusetts, February 11, 2020– Recipients from several communities across Cape Cod will receive a grant up to $6,000 from Barnstable County Department of Human Services through the Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative (SAPC). Recipients will use funds to pay for various efforts addressing substance use among youth. Barnstable, Falmouth, Mashpee, Harwich, Yarmouth, and Dennis will receive funding to support one or more of the following projects:

  • Vaping education
  • Parent education with Hidden in Plain Sight demonstrations
  • Parent forum on substance use
  • Calmer Choice Mindfulness Program
  • A documentary written and filmed by youth
  • Books provided to youth with parents in recovery from substance use disorder
  • Support to Mashpee Drop-in Night
  • Youth Substance-free events
  • Post-prom events
  • Public Service Announcements

The Committee, along with the newly formed Dennis Substance Use Disorder Advisory Council, will be working with Dennis-Yarmouth High School in providing a substance-free event, “Last Night Luau” at the Bass River Yacht Club, with food, music, games, photo booth, and Snapchat for a memorable night before senior graduation. The Committee will be working with the school to provide educational materials and creating PSA’s regarding the laws and dangers associated with underage drinking, vaping, and substance use.”[/su_quote]

About the (SAPC) Grant 

The Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative (SAPC) grant is part of a comprehensive approach to substance use prevention across the Commonwealth. With funding provided by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, the SAPC program in Barnstable County is part of a coordinated regional prevention effort. SAPC uses evidence-based strategies, including policy, practice, and system change, to reduce substance misuse and build capacity throughout the community to address underage drinking and other illicit substance use. SAPC partners include Barnstable School District, The Town of Sandwich, Prevention Committee, Falmouth Commission on Substance Use, Mashpee Substance Use Task Force, Dennis Substance Use Disorder Advisory Council, Yarmouth Substance Awareness Committee, Lower Cape Prevention Partnership – Harwich and Chatham (Monomoy Schools) and the Nauset School District. The SAPC Grant is administered by the Barnstable County Department of Human Services, and its activities are integrated with the Barnstable County Regional Substance Use Council (RSAC) and the Massachusetts Opioid Abuse Prevention Collaborative (MOAPC).
