Mosquitoes Collected in Barnstable County Tested Positive for West Nile Virus

Mosquito biting human skin.

Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project has informed County health officials of mosquitoes in our region that tested positive for West Nile Virus this week. Sampling data showed the following:

Barnstable: One sample of 41 Culex salinarius mosquitoes trapped in West Barnstable collected on 8/24 tested positive for West Nile virus.

Eastham: One sample of 10 Culex pipiens/restuans  mosquitoes trapped in the Fort Hill area collected on 8/24 tested positive for West Nile virus.

Since sampling is conducted by batch and results are positive/negative, it is unknown precisely how many mosquitoes tested positive.

According to Massachusetts mosquito sampling data, risk for transmission or West Nile Virus remains low in Barnstable County, while risk of transmission for EEE remains remote. Sampling data is updated weekly.
