Kicking Off Group Service with AmeriCorps Cape Cod
This past week marked the first official Group Service day for our AmeriCorps Cape Cod members, and they’ve already made a meaningful impact across Cape Cod’s natural and historical landscapes. Members from all three AmeriCorps houses came together for the first time this season, bringing their dedication, teamwork, and commitment to a variety of essential projects. Here’s a closer look at the work they accomplished:
Habitat Restoration in Falmouth
Partnering with the Falmouth Conservation Commission, members rolled up their sleeves to create vital wildlife habitats by removing invasive trees and plants. This hands-on effort is part of an ongoing initiative to restore natural habitats, supporting native species and enhancing ecosystem health.
Preparing Stony Brook Grist Mill in Brewster
In collaboration with Brewster’s Department of Natural Resources, members prepared the historic Stony Brook Grist Mill for the spring herring run. Clearing debris, ensuring safe passageways, and improving surrounding areas are just a few of the ways the team is setting the stage for the herring to return each spring.
Supporting the National Park Service with Bat Boxes
Members also partnered with the National Park Service to install bat boxes, which provide critical habitats for local bat populations. These boxes offer bats a safe place to roost and raise their young, supporting their role as natural pest controllers and essential players in the local ecosystem.
The variety of projects keeps the experience dynamic and engaging for our AmeriCorps Cape Cod members, allowing them to develop new skills and make a significant impact on Cape Cod’s unique landscapes and communities. We look forward to seeing what they tackle next.
Stay tuned for more updates as the AmeriCorps Cape Cod team continues to support, protect, and enhance our region.
