Make a Difference This MLK Day of Service: Join Us on January 20, 2025

Unite, serve, and prepare Cape Cod.

January 13, 2025 (Barnstable, MA) – Join us on January 20, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the 204 Cultural Arts Municipal Building (204 Sisson Road, Harwich) for a day of giveaways, fun, and disaster preparedness workshops as part of the 2025 MLK National Day of Service. This free community event, hosted by Barnstable County’s AmeriCorps Cape Cod in partnership with the American Red Cross, Southeastern MA Chapter, is designed to help Cape Cod residents prepare for the next big weather event.

The event will include:

  • A disaster preparedness fair, offering tips and tools for staying safe during emergencies from a variety of organizations.
  • Two active workshops (starting at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM) to teach hands-only CPR. Multiple sessions of “Be Red Cross Ready” will also occur throughout the day for anyone to attend!
  • A Kids’ Corner with coloring activities and story time to keep the little ones engaged.
  • Plenty of giveaways and fun for the whole family!
  • An opportunity to donate items for emergency kits, such as flashlights, batteries, blankets, and first aid supplies.

Registration is required for workshop participation. Registration can be found at the link www.capecod.gov/accevents

With Cape Cod’s unique vulnerabilities to hurricanes, nor’easters, and other severe weather, preparedness is key. This event empowers residents with knowledge, resources, and hands-on training to protect their families, pets, and homes.

AmeriCorps Cape Cod, a national service organization, focuses on natural resource management, disaster preparedness and response, community education, and volunteer engagement. Program Coordinator Michael Andranovich shares, “Cape Cod is a beautiful but fragile place. By hosting this event with the American Red Cross, we hope to equip our community with the tools and confidence they need to face the challenges of extreme weather. It’s an opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy by fostering resilience and preparedness among our neighbors.”
